Hmm… the pricing’s not bad, but the servers they offer aren’t flexible enough for what I need. I need to replace the “standard” installation of Apache, with a version of Apache compiled with mod_perl built into it, as opposed to an external module. Basically, I need my own box(es) and _cheap_ colocation.
WOW. That’s amazing. What kinda control do you get over the server? Full “you’re REALLY root and if you’re stupid enough you can run rm -rf / if you want to and nothing can stop you” level of control, or is it limited?
Depending on the uptake of paid accounts at Minilog.com I might well consider that. Hell, I might consider switching dcginternet and Rocket Dog Creative to that, too…
We have 6 of those servers at work (well, not that model, but the same premise) and you get total control of the physical machine. First thing I did was uninstall everything that comes stock, and re-compile apache, postfix, and named.
Dude, I want to do this - I want to move dcginternet, minilog.com and rocketdogcreative, along with all of their users and customers - who/what/when/where/how do i get this?

“if anyone could hook me up with a cheap deal on colocation, that’d also be an enormous help.”

Used to be £69 per month, now it’s £29 for dedicated server.

Colocation or a dedicated server?
E-mail them and see if they can do a customise package
I love that whole “dedicated” server scam. It’s not dedicated :P
You can get this:
Intel Celeron 1.3
512MB RAM
60GB IDE HDD
400GB/mo BANDWIDTH ($1.50/gb OVER)
Plain Red Hat 7.2
For $99/mo here in the US, which is about 60GBP/mo
Well I need to be able to replace apache and stuff so fake “dedicated” Ensim environments won’t do.
Ensim is awful.
Well, traditionally:
Colocation = You supply the hardware, you use their connection.
Dedicated = They supply the machine and connection.
Look into what I posted below.

I will have to seriously consider that… I’ll wait until my current dcginternet server contract expires, and let you know…

Who - You
What - Order Online
When - Now
Where - http://www.rackshack.net/
How - Browser :P
Dude, Ensim’s everywhere. I HATE Ensim. Can I kill it if I go with them?
Never mind… didn’t see that they offered it without Ensim…
One other thing… reliability? What’re they like?
We’ve only really had intermittant problems with one of our servers, and that’s pretty much solved now.
We run member-based paysites, so availability is a must ;)
